2007 Form W-2 Employee SSN Field Relocated

To protect an employee's Social Security number (SSN) from disclosure when employers use a window envelope to furnish Forms W-2 to their employees, the IRS made the following changes to the 2007 Form W-2:

  • Relocated the "Employee's social security number" box from box d to box a.
  • Moved the "Control number" box (optionally used by some employers to identify individual Forms W-2) from box a to box d.
  • Relocated the form ID number ("22222") and "Void" boxes to the top left corner of Form W-2.

The IRS also made these changes to enhance processing efficiency.

Payroll Update 20801, which will be released in mid-December, will allow QuickBooks 2005 and later versions to print the employee's Social Security number field in its new location (box a) on the 2007 Form W-2 when you use either the blank/perforated paper option or the preprinted forms option. The preprinted forms ordered through Intuit will support the 2007 Form W-2.
